Surgical Excavation

COLLABORATION 11SYN-10-848 (SURGICAL EXCAVATION)

Tomographic documentation in time and space of archaeological excavations using “tomography” with resolution from micrometer to meter for specialized research and educational purposes for the general public.

Operational program “COOPERATION 2011”, with co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union and from national resources (ERDF 2007 – 2013).

The object of the project was to create an integrated solution for the documentation of cultural goods related to excavation sites. The developed system supports the collection, management and display of data related to the excavation and the objects discovered in it, at different times and at different spatial points, using 3D techniques. The system also supports virtual site visit, allowing users to access multiple data and broadcasts in a user-friendly manner.

In the context of the project, innovative techniques of multispectral photography, nIR/mIR/UV/VIS spectroscopy, acoustic microscopy, spatio-temporal 3D modeling and knowledge mining were also applied. These techniques were applied in the excavation of Dion.
