Surgical Excavation

COOPERATION 11SYN-10-848 (SURGICAL EXCAVATION)

Tomographic documentation in time and in place of archaeological excavations using micro-to-meter-level “tomography” for specialized research and wide-audience education purposes
It is a research project under the Operational Programme “Cooperation”, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), European Union and national funds (NSRF 2007-2013).

Project Code: 11SYN-10-848
Start date: 01-January-2013
Duration: 30 months

Scope
The developed system supports the collection, extraction, management and educational demonstration of an excavation process and an excavation site. The project resulted into a product that provides presentation of all information related to the excavation procedure and tasks, as well as all derived knowledge. The presentation takes place in a web environment that presents in time and in place the excavation site, process, and artifacts using advance 3D technologies. The system enables virtual visits to the site, allowing users to access the data and metadata in a user-friendly environment, acting as an educational tool.
Towards this end multispectral imaging, nIR/mIR/UV/VIS spectroscopy, acoustic microscopy, spatio-temporal and 3D modeling, data mining, and knowledge extraction were used. A case scenario was deployed in the Dion excavation.
